Women’s shorts- Paving new trend in fashion

History of shorts:

Shorts were first worn by men in the Bronze Age (3000 BC-1200 BC) and made from flax and wool. Through the centuries, they were wardrobe staples on everything from battlefields to farms. In fact, men’s shorts have been worn longer than long pants, which were invented in the late-1700s. The idea of a woman wearing shorts was nothing short of scandalous, even up to and well into the twentieth century. It was not just because they showed too much leg; they were too casual for a time when gloves, corsets, and dresses were everyday ladies wear.

In the Victorian era, the closest thing to shorts for women was a version of biking shorts that resembled bloomers. By the 1920s and 1930s, women grew bolder, taking more chances with their wardrobe. While men freely donned the new Bermuda “walking” shorts, which originated on the namesake island, women of wealth could wear a ladies’ version as a symbol of the resort lifestyle. Movie stars helped lead the charge to normalize men’s wear as acceptable for women, particularly Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, and Jean Harlow – all of whom were photographed wearing pants or the newly created “short-shorts” in casual settings. Still, shorts for average women were hit or miss when it came to acceptance during this time period. By the 1940s, social mores slowly shifted, due in part to WWII and women joining the workforce to replace men serving overseas. Designer Claire McCardell created a line of women’s sportswear that included shorts. Ladies began wearing Bermuda shorts not only to garden in or for riding bikes, but also to throw on before hitting the town. In fact, Vogue first included the term “Bermuda shorts” in their October 1948 issue.

The 1950s-1960s saw shorts and other similar designs like Capri pants and pedal pushers become go-to fashion statements. Movie stars like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly sported a variety of these types of casual wear. Wool Bermuda shorts became staples on college campuses. However, shorts of any length were still regulated by certain institutions and mores. For example, universities like Penn State prohibited their female students from wearing shorts after 7 p.m., and city dwellers were expected to wear more professional attire, so shorts were seen as taboo in urban settings.

The hippie movement of the late 1960s into the 1970s up-ended any preconceived notions, reservations, or societal judgments when it came to women’s fashions – especially when it came to the length of skirts and shorts. In fact, the term “hot pants” was created to describe the updated, fabric-made “short-shorts” of decades past, which women of all races and economic backgrounds began wearing. A sister to the hot pant, “Daisy Dukes” became famous when actress Catherine Bach wore a denim version of short-shorts each week on the hit TV show “Dukes of Hazzard” during the late-‘70s and early-‘80s. Also extremely popular in the 1970s was a very short satin or nylon athletic short outlined by tube trim called dolphin shorts.

The 1980s-1990s saw the rise of the culottes – a hybrid pair of shorts that resembled a short skirt – which could be worn anywhere from school to shopping to dinner. The added security of it being an actual pair of shorts made wearing such a short skirt palpable for modest types. Also popular during these years were cargo shorts, athletic shorts, boy shorts (abbreviated hot pants),andbiking shorts. Demi Moore even wore an infamous biking shorts/gown hybrid to the Academy Awards in 1989. By the millennium, wearing any length of or any type of shorts was not only acceptable, but also expected as a fashion-forward woman in the world.
