Top Documentaries On Fashion

The fashion industry has always been shrouded in glamour and intrigue; it is a world that many people appreciate but only a select few have ever experienced. Fashion documentaries provide a unique view behind the scenes, with everything from profiles of renowned fashion designers to an inside look at a magazine. These are the top fashion documentaries to watch right now if you're searching for some style and escape.

These fashion films are the ideal remedy if you have a deep curiosity (sorry, minor obsession) about how brilliant individuals live their lives. They provide countless clothing options, stunning architecture, and even behind-the-scenes peeks at some of the most well-known fashion designers, tastemakers, and cultural movements. So gather up your preferred movie snacks and beverages, and then sit back and allow your creativity to flow from the comfort of your couch.

  • The Gospel According André- André Leon Talley, a flamboyantly larger-than-life editor who battled prejudice and elitism to become the most recognisable name in the business, is a fashion exception. Tom Ford says Talley could be among the last editors who have actually experienced fashion during its heyday in the 1970s. He is a revered character who recounts his remarkable career at Vogue in this film.

  • Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist -  Why not go further into the world of the punk precursor herself? Cruella, Disney's most recent film to make the evil character a hero story, has left fans on a high. Westwood, who leaned heavily on deconstruction as a tactic of revolution in the 1970s, pushed the masses to liberty in leather-clad outfits and provocative T-shirts. Particularly in Cruella, which places Emma Stone's heroine in the glam-punk universe that Westwood helped create, her influence can be noticed practically everywhere in fashion. Discover the icon's path to legacy by watching this documentary.

  • DIOR AND I - Dior and I, directed by Frédéric Tcheng, transports audiences to Christian Dior's magical universe in 2012 as Raf Simon creates his debut haute couture collection. This eight-week trip follows periods of immense self-confidence and self-doubt with a feeling of history and a feel for the rigorous pace of production within the atelier, from Simons' first day at work to the formal runway premiere. Along with Simons' story, the movie also highlights the devoted designers and tailors who execute the artistic director's dreams, panning through the opulent corridors of the Maison until the show's major reveal.
  • IRIS- The 97-year-old style icon Iris Apfel, whose huge round black-rimmed glasses and diverse sense of style have made her one of the industry's most recognisable tastemakers, is the subject of a visually striking character study by renowned documentarian Albert Maysles. We see Apfel's tact and commitment to finding her items inside her maximalist surroundings, as well as the overwhelming amount of apparel and jewellery that borders on hoarding. Iris is more than just a fashion documentary; it tells the tale of a free spirit and her unwavering passion for style, the arts, creativity, and the people in her life.
  • BILL CUNNIGHAM NEW YORK- The best street style historian was the late Bill Cunningham, and he always will be. This affectionate documentary paints a touching, gently humorous portrait of Cunningham's modest charm and work ethic while giving a rare glimpse into his private life and the people with whom he closely worked. For several decades, Cunningham devotedly snapped photos of New York's most interestingly dressed individuals — high society and ordinary folk alike — to document real fashion as it happened for his New York Times Style columns "On the Street" and "Evening Hours." According to Anna Wintour, "Bill gets us all outfitted."
  • THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE- The September Edition by R.J. Cutler follows American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her staff of editors as they produce the September 2007 issue, which at almost five pounds was the heaviest magazine issue ever printed. The largest fashion magazine in the world is the subject of this behind-the-scenes documentary, which examines the motivations, passions, and labour that go into it. It provides a fly-on-the-wall portrait of its key personalities as well as their pivotal moments of agreement and discord.
  • CATWALK- Catwalk, which centres on Christy Turlington, one of the most well-known supermodels of the time, transports audiences back to the 1990s and the supermodel era. The scene is set during the 1994 spring fashion weeks in Milan, Paris, and New York as Turlington flits between fittings for brands like Chanel, Dior, and Versace as well as filming a W cover. Numerous other well-known fashion figures may be seen in the video, including supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell as well as renowned creators like Jean-Paul Gaultier, Valentino Garavani, and the late Gianni Versace.
  • Mcqueen- In this riveting documentary on British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, darkness and brilliance clash. East Londoner McQueen was an outcast from the start, and his work was stunning but divisive, at times being called startling, disgusting, and misogynistic. This documentary explores the genius and beauty of his art as well as the emotional issues underlying that darkness that caused him to commit suicide in 2010. McQueen was unrepentant for his extraordinary vision, declaring, "I want people to be repelled or excited."
  • HALSTON- This documentary by director Frédéric Tcheng charts the growth and collapse of American fashion designer Halston and tells the tale of an Iowa youngster who grew up to become one of New York's elite in the fashion world. Halston ruled the fashion world in the 1970s and was well-known for mixing with Hollywood's elite, including Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor, and a slew of Studio 54 stars. Halston, however, was forced to take the biggest risk of his life when the Wall Street stock market crash threatened to destroy his company. Tavi Gevinson, a fashion blogger and actress who plays a former archivist turned detective tasked with shedding light on the underappreciated artist, conducts an investigation.
  • THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY- A glitzy documentary tracing the preparations for the 2015 China: Through the Looking Glass fashion exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art The year building up to the occasion is followed as Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, goes about her daily activities. We also suggest the following item on our list, The September Issue, if you're curious to learn more about Anna Wintour's life.

THIS ONE IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE AS IT SHOWS THE INDUSTRY FROM THE INSIDE-

  • THE TRUE COST- A disturbing documentary called The True Cost examines the emergence of fast fashion and the impact it has on both people and the environment. Although it may not be a documentary that would inspire you creatively, it does stress the importance of supporting independent retailers and manufacturers of apparel.
  • DIANA VREELAND- Diana Vreeland, who was best known for serving as editor-in-chief of Vogue in the 1960s and 1970s, is profiled in this biography of one of the most significant figures in fashion. Before moving on, Vreeland spent several years as the Harper's Bazaar fashion editor, where she initially rose to prominence. While there, she pushed the boundaries of what was considered fashionable at the time by incorporating art and contemporary into her bold vision. You can tell what a perceptive and progressive person she was by watching old film and listening to interviews with her. She actively encouraged others around her to think beyond the box.

All these documentaries are a must-watch and we recommend you to watch all of them.
